Sudbury Wolves forward Matthew Mania scored his first playoff goal on Wednesday, helping the Pack to a 5-3 win over the MIssissauga Steelheads and giving them a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the Sudbury Wolves and the Mississauga Steelheads Mississauga Steelheads was a penalty-filled affair, but ultimately the Pack skated to a win at Sudbury Arena, taking a 3-1 lead in the series.

Rookie goalie Jack Ivankovic once again got the start in goal for the Steelheads while Jakub Vondras was the starting goaltender for the hometown Wolves.

An early penalty from the Wolves opened the door for Mississauga’s Angus MacDonell to open the scoring, giving the Steelheads a 1-0 lead at 4:07 of the first.

Both netminders stopped all pucks for much of the remainder of the period. Late in the first though and also on a power play, the Wolves tied the game thanks to Evan Konyen scoring his third goal of the playoffs.

The teams would head to the dressing room knotted at 1-1.

Barely a minute into the second period, Finn Harding helped Mississauga regain the lead with his first goal of the playoffs, making the score 2-1 for the Steelheads.

But at 8:40 of the middle frame, Wolves’ captain David Goyette scored his third goal of the playoffs, yet another power play goal, to once again tie the score 2-2.

With 9:35 remaining in the period, the Wolves took a 3-2 lead, yet again on the power play, with Landon McCallum’s third goal of the playoffs.

At the 13:15 mark of the second period, on yet another power play, the Wolves got an insurance goal off the stick of Matthew Mania, his first of the playoffs, giving Sudbury a 4-2 lead.

The Steelheads would not go away quietly, however, as they pulled themselves to within a goal with exactly five minutes remaining in the second period. Mississauga’s Adam Zidlicky’s first goal of the playoffs made the score 4-3 for the Wolves.

With 2:17 remaining in the second, Nick Yearwood scored his first goal of the playoffs to give the Wolves a 5-3 lead with one period remaining in the game.

Neither team could score in the third and final period, resulting in a 5-3 victory for the Sudbury Wolves over the Mississauga Steelheads.

On the road to victory, the Sudbury Wolves won in the shots-on-goal department by a margin of 45-28 and went four-for-nine on the power play.

The Sudbury Wolves look to clinch the series with a win in Game 5, which will be played in Mississauga on Friday (April 5) with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
