Five celebrate fifth birthday with victory over Pharaohs

The Sudbury Five were back on home court for a Sudbury Saturday night, celebrating their fifth birthday as a team with a game against the Pontiac Pharaohs. 

The first quarter was a high scoring affair on both ends, with Pontiac players such as Andre Johnson and James Towns contributing major points, 21 and 28 respectively throughout the game, and Sudbury’s Jalen Hayes and Andrew Whitsett, scoring major points of their own, with the score 36-32 for the Five after the first quarter of play. 

Sudbury would give themselves a bit of breathing room throughout the second, with contributions from players such as AJ Mosby Jr. and Landon Kirkwood, who scored 12 and 15 points respectively in the game, and at halftime the Sudbury Five held an 11 point lead, by a score of 68-57. 

Sudbury continued to light up the scoreboard right out of the gate to start the third quarter, with players such as Samuel Daniel and Evan Harris getting in on the action, and with one quarter remaining, the Sudbury Five were up by a score of 103-86. 

Cody John and Duane Notice would also help propel the Five forward in the fourth quarter, with nine and seven points respectively, powering the Sudbury Five to a 131-121 victory over the Pontiac Pharaohs on their fifth birthday. 

With the win, the Sudbury Five now hold a record of four wins and two losses, which is good for second place in the Basketball Super League. 

The Five are back on the court at the Sudbury Community Arena on Saturday, Jan. 20 against the Montreal Toundra with a scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m.
