The Sudbury Five were in Montreal, Quebec, for another night of Basketball Super League action against the Montreal Toundra on Saturday night, hoping to improve their record to three wins and zero losses.
Sudbury newcomer Samuel Daniel was celebrating his birthday on game day and hoping to come away with a win.
Montreal came out of the gate firing on all cylinders scoring a total of 33 points in the first quarter, while holding Sudbury to just 24 of their own, and the Toundra held a 9 point lead heading into the second quarter.
Sudbury came storming back in the second quarter with 35 points, from Daniel, who scored a total of 23 points throughout the entire game, and Jalen Hayes, who scored 23 of his own, and held a slim 59-58 lead over Montreal at halftime.
Montreal came out of the dressing room after halftime much like they started the game, scoring 31 points in the quarter from the likes of Tafari Beckford and Levi Londole who scored 16 and 24 points in the game, respectively, and held the Five to 21 points in the quarter. Sudbury found themselves trailing by a score of 89-80 with one quarter remaining.
Sudbury wasn’t going to give up without their best efforts, however. With contributions from players such as Landon Kirkwood and former Portland Trailblazer Kelvin Blevins, the Five scored 25 in the fourth quarter to secure a come from behind win over the Montreal Toundra by a score of 114-111.
With the win, the Sudbury Five now hold the only undefeated record in the Basketball Super League with three wins and zero losses on the season, good for first place in the league.
A rematch between the Sudbury Five and the Montreal Toundra will take place on Sunday, Jan. 7, once again in Montreal, with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m. local (Sudbury) time.
