Ford continues to dominate the mat

Sudbury wrestler Diana Ford is a national champion.

Ford put on an awesome display of toughness and skill at the recent Canadian National Wrestling Championships in Whitby.

Ford won all four of her matches, pinning every opponent, en route to a gold medal in the 52-kilogram division.

Ford had 16 of the best girls from across Canada in her category, but dominated the pace and tone of all her foes.

The golden performance put Ford on the Canadian national squad, and she will compete for Canada at the Pan American Games in Venezuela in June.

The 18-year-old wrestles for the Rayside Wrestling Club.

Ford and her mother, Joan, moved to Greater Sudbury from Kentville, Nova Scotia in 2005 so the talented wrestler to get more competition to further blossom her intriguing mat skills.

Another Rayside wrestler also made the national team.

Sheldon Burton won the Fila Team Canada Trials the day after the national championships.

He won four matches as well, which included defeating the 58-kilogram Canadian champion. Burton will compete in a tournament in Panama City in August.

A third wrestler, Jenna Howard, won a national silver.
