Cambrian College sports have gone into overdrive.
Even though their season is now done, the Cambrian College
women's volleyball team made a big impact at the year-end
awards banquet.
Fourth year veteran middle blocker Laura Fowler, in her fourth
and final year, put the icing on her career cake by being named
the OCAA Female Player of the Year.
She also made the 2007 First All-Star Team. Fowler was joined
on the All-Star squad by teammate second-year setter Ashley
Matier.
Fowler finished as the regular season scoring champion and was
also named a Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA)
All-Canadian.
Head coach Dale Beausoleil was named the top coach after
guiding Cambrian to a 12-3 record, and second place overall in
the OCAA Central East Division.
The men's volleyball team also got some much-deserved
recognition at the awards banquet.
The team went 5-8 on the season, but two players - James
Castonguay and Doug Nielsen had marvellous seasons.
As a rookie, Nielsen racked up 173 points and averaged 3.68
points-per-game (PPG) to lead Cambrian. Those totals also
placed him second overall in each in the OCAA Central East
Division.
Castonguay averaged 1.06 PPG.
In men's basketball, the Golden Shield are riding tall in the
saddle after winning a big match against Centennial College
this past weekend to advance to the OCAA Championships.
It has been a turn around season for the men.
Cambrian was hard pressed to earn wins and respect last season
fashioning a dismal 2-16 record, resulting in their elimination
the playoffs.
The team has been lead by local products Mitch Mallette and
Mike Raskevicins, who averaged 19.89 and 14.28 PPG
respectively. Mallette scored 36 points in the big 79-73 win
over Centennial.
The win allows the Golden Shield to compete at Durham College
this upcoming weekend for the OCAA Championship.
Overall, the team went 10-8 during the regular season. The team
also got great support scoring from Jerome Bailey, 14.17 PPG
and Brandon Lalourelle, 12.17 PPG.
