Laurentian Lady Vees' basketball forward Lisa Furchner and Voyageurs men's basketball guard Mitch Mallette have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar Athletes of the Week for the period of Jan. 6 to Jan. 12.

Furchner (Sudbury, Ont.) was the Lady Vees' top scorer over the weekend, averaging 15.5 points per game against RMC and Queen's. Friday night at RMC, Furchner dominated the Paladins in the post, scoring a game-high 17 points and also tallied eight rebounds.

Furchner was also the Lady Vees' hottest shooter as she shot 80 per cent from the field. The Lady Vees went on to win 64-59. On Saturday in a game at Queen's, Furchner was again dominant on the offensive end as she poured in 14 points and was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, an area the Lady Vees struggled in on Friday night.

The Lady Vees would lose to the Gaels, however, 71-62. Furchner is a third year concurrent education student and is also in her third season with the Lady Vees.

Mallette (Sudbury, Ont.) had a very strong weekend for the Voyageurs and excelled both offensively and defensively. On Friday night against RMC, Mallette contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

However, it was his defensive play that caught the eye of head coach Shawn Swords. Swords credited Mallette's defensive rebounding efforts in the second quarter of the game as an area that helped the Voyageurs pull away to a 93-49 victory. Saturday night against Queens', Mallette stepped up his offensive game and was the team's second highest scorer with 13 points.

Mallette also had three steals in the game in a losing effort against the Gaels, 85-65. Mallette is a second year Social Work major and is in his first year with the Voyageurs after transferring from Cambrian College.

Both Furchner and Mallette will see action this weekend as the men's and women's basketball teams welcome the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees to the nickel city.

On Friday, Jan. 16 the Lady Vees will take on the Carleton Ravens. On the same night the Voyageurs will host the #1 Ravens men's basketball team. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the fourth place Lady Vees will take on the third place Gee-Gees in their annual Battle for Breast Cancer Game. Proceeds from the game will go to breast cancer research.

The Voyageurs will play the fourth CIS ranked Gee-Gees men's team. Both women's games will tip off at 6 p.m. while both men's games will tip off at 8 p.m. in the Ben Avery Gymnasium.
