The Lasalle Secondary School Senior Girls' Basketball Team travelled to Kitchener Waterloo this past weekend and won the annual Wilfrid Laurier University Invitational Tournament.
There were 18 teams in all and the girls played six regulation
games in two days.  In their first game of the tournament,
the Lancers defeated BreBeuf from Hamilton 71-30 and then went
on to beat KCI from Kitchener 46-40, St. Mike's from Stratford
45-34, and Almaguin Highlands from South River 59-21.
The Lasalle girls were undefeated in pool play and met St.
David's from Kitchener Waterloo in the semi-final. Strong
defense and a patient offence was too much for St. David's and
the girls won 47-31. In the final, the Lancers took on Nelson
from Burlington, who were medallists at "AAA" OFSAA last
year.  The Lancers ended the half swishing a 75-foot shot
at the buzzer, tying the score 30-30.  In a third quarter
surge, the girls came out and rallied strong for a 21 point to
one run.  The speed and aggressive defence by all players
was too much for Burlington to handle and the final score was
60-37 in favour of the Lancers.
Amanda McDonald was named the Tournament MVP and Kristine
Lalonde was selected as an All-Star.
The top 64 high school seniors and juniors in the province have
been selected to attend the 'by invitation' only elite event on
Sunday, Oct. 1 and will showcase their talent in front of NCAA
and CIS coaches and scouts.
