Three local hockey teams are vying for ultimate glory in the Great North Midget League. Here's a look at what each club has been up to.

Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves

The Capitals are holding firm onto their second spot in the league standings and trying to close the gap on leading Sault Ste. Marie, who are 11 points ahead of Sudbury.

Current record and league standing: 21-7-0-1, second overall.

Previous result: 4-2 win over Kapuskasing on Jan. 15.

Next two games: Sudbury at Timmins, Saturday, Jan. 21. Game time is 7:30 pm. Sudbury at Kapuskasing, Sunday, Jan. 22. Game time is 2 pm.

Leading scorers (games played, goals, assists and points): Vern Cooper 29-33-31-64, Joey Derochie 22-23-24-47, Jordan Kuruliak 28-20-18-38.

Goalie stats (games played and goals-against-average): Andre Frappier 41-2.78, Joey Delwo 53-3.71.

Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats

The Sabrecats have dropped two straight games, but are still keeping the pressure on North Bay, who are five points ahead of Rayside, for third spot in the GNML. The two clubs hook up for a key match up this weekend.

Current record and league standing: 14-12-1-1, fourth overall.

Previous result: 5-4 loss to New Liskeard on Jan. 15.

Next two games: North Bay at Rayside, Sunday, Jan. 22. Game time at the Chelmsford Arena is 1:30 pm. Rayside at Sudbury, Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Game time at the Countryside Arena is 7:30 pm.

Leading scorers: Mike Mascioli 26-18-13-31, Jeff Verreault 28-8-21-29, Chad Mallette 26-13-15-28.

Goalie stats: Al Valiquette 25-2.47, Joshua Taibossigai 64-4.76, Riley Polden 22-5.50.

Valley East Cobras

The Cobras are still slithering around the bottom of the league's standings, but remain out of the basement, holding a six-point lead over cellar-dweller Kapuskasing.

Current record and league standing: 9-18-0-0, eighth overall.

Previous result: 6-3 win over New Liskeard on Jan. 14.

Next two games: North Bay at Valley East, Friday, Jan. 20. Game time at the Ray Plourde Arena is 8:20 pm. New Liskeard at Valley East, Saturday, Jan. 21. Game time is 8:20 pm.

Leading scorers: Scott Faulkner 26-13-13-26, Garrett Hamel 27-13-13-26, Justin Hogan 27-3-18-21.

Goalie stats: Tyler Beskorowany 80-4.80, Shawn Sirman 52-5.04.
