Cambrian Golden Shield men's basketball team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 75-68 in Wednesday evening's exhibition match held at Laurentian University.

It was the first game of the year for Cambrian, and head coach Brad Hann was pleased with the team's performance.

"It was a really competitive game and I thought, being our first game and having only practiced up to that point, we played quite well," said Hann, adding that it was a good experience to play against the university.

With both schools being in Sudbury, Hann said it was a great atmosphere and a really fun game.

Top scorers for Cambrian were Brady Bolan with 24 points and Lucas Wiebenga with 15 points.

Both players are transfers from Laurentian who started playing with team last Christmas. This will be the first full season for both players.

Many of the players were familiar with each other, which created a friendly rivalry among the teams.

Gerome Bailey, who scored six points for Cambrian, made his presence known on the gym floor.

"He did a tremendous job rebounding at both ends of the floor," said the head coach.

Regular game play doesn't begin until the end of October, but Hann has good expectations for the season.

"Our goal this year is to get into that final four and compete for a provincial championship," he said.

The coach added that they have a very competitive and experienced team this year. The have two strong players in Bolan and Wiebenga, but Hann said the team is very balanced.

"If we play up to our potential, we have just as good a chance as anybody else at getting there and meeting that goal."

Cambrian has two more exhibition games coming up next week. The first is on Thursday October 16 against Dalhousie University which will be played at Laurentian. Game time is 5 p.m.

Friday October 17, the Golden Shield will face off against Wilfrid Laurier University on Cambrian's home gym at 2:30 p.m.
