The annual Strokes for Hope charity golf tournament took place Thursday afternoon at Timberwolf Golf Course, with many participants getting their clubs out for a worthy cause.

The event, which has been an annual fundraiser since 1995, raises funds for the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. To date $468,000 has been raised for the foundation. This year executive director Denise Plouffe is hoping to hit the $500,000 mark. The money will go towards research and patient care.

"This is one of the largest events that we have. It's always very successful. It makes a big difference at the end of the year as to what we can provide for our researchers and patient care," said Plouffe.

Gold sponsors for the event included Carriere Industrial Supply, Northern Life and FNX. Vale Inco was the title sponsor for this year's fundraiser.

"I think anytime you get the opportunity to come out and support cancer research foundation, it's an opportunity you just can't pass up," said Vale Inco public affairs specialist Gary Holman. "We're extremely proud to be a part of it."
