Greater Sudbury's Michael Hay is a world triathlon champion.
In Vancouver recently, Hay earned the gold medal in the Men's 40+ Masters Division at the 2008 International Triathlon Union (ITU) Olympic Age Group Championships.
Hay blazed across the finish line in a time of 1:40:36.
The race was switched at last moment to deal with harsh conditions brought on by bad weather.
Race officials eliminated the swim portion of the event due to 55-degree water, extreme weather and a five-foot wind chop.
Competitors ran a three kilometre section first, followed by a 38 kilometre bicycle race and finished with another 10 kilometre run.
Hay was pretty excited to win this World Championship race.
"I have been in this sport for a long time and I always believed that if I trained properly and had a good day I was good enough to be one of the best. Well I finally had that good day," Hay said in a news release.
"Despite the change to duathlon format, this win is one of the sweetest wins in my life. Sudbury is a great place to live and train and this win proves that people who live in Northern Ontario can be the best!"
