Hockey Heritage North (HHN), the North's newest tourist attraction built in Kirkland Lake, Ontario held its Grand Opening on June 29, 2006. Invited guests included government officials, sponsors, honoured members and HHN board members, staff and Volunteers.
Four years in the planning, HHN, at over 18,000 square feet, is
designed to celebrate the proud tradition of hockey throughout
all of northeastern Ontario, including Sundridge, North Bay,
Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, New Liskeard, Kirkland Lake, Kearns,
Timmins, Moosenee and all points in between.
Support from FedNor, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and the
Town of Kirkland Lake, along with private sector fundraising
campaign, has contributed over $8 million in support of the
project to date.
Senator Frank Mahovlich is the honourary chair of the organization and is one of the over 300 former and current NHL players, coaches and officials from the area who will be showcased at the centre.
"As a northerner, I am very proud of the significant
contributions our home-grown players have made to Canada's game
at both the professional and amateur levels," said Northern
Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci. 
"I am pleased that the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund could
support the establishment of this new facility and I
congratulate the supporters of Hockey Heritage North on its
official opening."
Other supporters of the project include the Hockey Hall of
Fame, the NHL Players Assoc., the NHL Players Alumni Assoc. and
the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Over forty
municipalities signed resolutions in council supporting the
project.
