Athletes of the Week
(For third week in October)
Moriah Thorpe is a Grade 10 honour  student at Collège
Notre-Dame and plays the position of point guard for the
school's junior basketball team.  Her dedication, hard
work and leadership have contributed to the schools'
continued basketball success.  On the court, Thorpe plays
with confidence and determination.  Her ball control and
quick precise passes  distinguish her among the league's
top guards. She was a key player behind  Collège
Notre-Dame's recent championship at a tournament in Timmins.
Thorpe was chosen most valuable player for the tournament.
Éric Robert is a Grade 12 student at École secondaire du
Sacré-Coeur. Although his physical stature is seen as being a
great asset to the senior boys' volleyball team, it is his
leadership skills both on and off the court that are what set
him apart from other athletes.
Robert's contribution to the team as a middle hitter is second
to none. He's a focused and dedicated athlete.
OFSAA news
After the spring of 2008, when SDSSAA plays host to the OFSAA
Girls' "AA" Volleyball championship, the next provincial
championship to be hosted locally could be the OFSAA Boys'
"AAA" Soccer event in the spring of 2010.  This could be
the second time in SDSSAA's history this event would be hosted
in Sudbury, the last time was in 1997 when the St. Charles
Cardinals lost the gold medal game on penalty kicks.  This
time around, Lockerby has expressed interest to put in a bid
for this event.
A+ Performer of the Day
Today, it's Lo-Ellen Park multi sport athlete Ross Proudfoot.
The quick footed runner recently won the junior boys'
6000-metre cross-country running city championship. He won the
midget boys' city crown last year as well. He has now qualified
for NOSSA.
Proudfoot also plays for the junior boys' soccer team. He
helped the Knights make the playoffs with a 4-4 record and
scored two goals in seven games.
Honour Roll
Recently, athletes from across Greater Sudbury met to decide
the city cross-country running championships at Laurentian
University. Here's a list of the top winners from both the
girls' and boys' divisions. Midget level: Lo-Ellen Park's
Alannah MacLean won the girls side, while St. Benedict's
Sebastian Diebel won the boys. Junior level: Notre-Dame's Kayla
Gallo won the girls, while Lo-Ellen Park's Proudfoot won the
boys category. Senior level: Lo-Ellen Park's Katie Maziarski
won the girls, while Lockerby's Chantry Cargill won the boys
side. Top qualifiers now move onto the NOSSA Championships,
which takes place Friday in Sault Ste. Marie.
Junior boys' soccer
The city championship will be decided today. The game will be
decided by either Lockerby, St. Charles, Lo-Ellen or St.
Benedict. All four made the semi finals, but results weren't in
at press time. Game time is 4 pm and it takes place at James
Jerome South.
