The weather might have been damp and dreary as the 2014 kickoff to the SDSSAA soccer season was launched Wednesday at the James Jerome Sports Complex, but that wasn't about to stop the Confederation Chargers' girls from shining a little light on their very successful program.

Looking to make their fourth consecutive appearance at the OFSAA A Girls Soccer Championships, the Chargers served notice yesterday, spotting the Lo-Ellen Park Knights a 1-0 second-half goal before roaring back with four of their own.

Kayleigh Coufal paced the attack with a two-goal effort, with Davianna Graham and Shayna Graham chipping in with one tally apiece. Chelsea Noble-Poland opened the scoring for Lo-Ellen, converting off a corner kick.

In the remaining girls game played on Wednesday, the Lively Hawks received goals from Tatum Hurley and Amy Laframboise, while Tara St Jean and Robyn Lalonde shared the shutout in a 2-0 whitewashing of the Espanola Spartans.

The Espanola boys evened the score in the late game, picking up a shutout win of their own with a long drifting cross, early in the second half, finding the mark as the Spartans blanked the Hawks 1-0.

In one other boys game, Lo-Ellen and Confederation played to a 1-1 draw, with a final match between the Marymount Regals and Lockerby Vikings.

Play resumes this afternoon, with five more games on the slate for the James Jerome Complex, including the season opener for the defending boys city champions from St Benedict Catholic Secondary School.
