Hockey teams commute in support of native evacuees

Two teams participating in the Big Nickel Hockey Tournament in Greater Sudbury this weekend have given up their hotel accommodations to Kashechewan evacuees.

The West Michigan Warriors and North Bay's Hilltop Variety Blades have both made alternate sleeping arrangements in support of the evacuation efforts. There was concern, because of the number of hockey teams in the city, that some evacuees would have to leave their hotel rooms for the length of the tournament.

"Once apprised of the situation, both teams volunteered to commute from a considerable distance to attend the tournament, giving up their pre-booked rooms to Kashechewan residents," said Greater Sudbury Mayor Dave Coutemanche.

The puck drops today on the Big Nickel Hockey Tournament featuring 60 teams playing at arenas across the city. The tournament runs until Nov. 6.
