The Kal Tire Sudbury Jr. Wolves put in a strong effort, but it wasn't enough as the league-leading North Bay Skyhawks defeated the Wolves 7-4 Wednesday night at the Garson Arena.

Jr. Wolves' defencemen did all the scoring for the team. Veteran Chris Pontes scored twice, while Luc Comtois and Aaron Cole scored singles.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-3 after the second period. Sudbury took the lead 4-3 early in the third, but the Skyhawks came back to score four unanswered goals in the final frame, including an empty-netter.

Rookie forward Evan Daciuk recorded two assists and was named the game's second star. The Jr. Wolves outshot North Bay 35-34.

The Jr. Wolves were missing defenceman Tyler Arps and forward Brandon Labelle, who were serving game suspensions. The Jr. Wolves also lost the services of defenceman Cheyenne King-Wabigijig and captain Jordan Cheechoo due to injury.

Prior to the start of the game, the Jr. Wolves recognized the sponsorship of Paul Lizotte. Paul Lizotte Esso Fuels is the proud sponsor of the Challenge Cup, which recognizes hockey supremacy in the North between Sudbury and North Bay.

Lizotte was presented with a plaque of appreciation by Jr. Wolves captain Jordan Cheechoo.

The Jr. Wolves will now enjoy some time off this week and prepare for their next game next Wednesday night when the Western Division leading Soo Thunderbirds come to Garson. Game time is 8 p.m.
