The Sudbury Junior Wolves started the new year with a 5-3 loss to the Abitibi Eskimos Wednesday night at the Garson Arena.
The first period the Jr. Wolves failed to get on the scoreboard while Abitibi scored three markers, taking the lead 3-0 to start the second period.
Tyler Arps hit the board for the Jr. Wolves in the second, but the Eskimos still had a 4-1 lead to end the period.
Chris Pontes and Erik Belanger saw the back of the net in the third and the Eskimos closed out the game 5-3.
The Eskimos are currently in second place in the Eastern Division standings behind the North Bay Skyhawks. The Jr. Wolves are sitting in the third.
Game stars for the night went to Dustin Roy for the Eskimos, Erik Belanger for the Jr. Wolves and Jessie Howg for the Eskimos.
Belanger was honoured prior to the game in recognition of his selection to the 2008 CJHL Top Prospects Game, which was held in Summerside P.E.I on Dec. 17.
The Jr. Wolves will now travel to Sault, Michigan where they will play two league games against the Soo Eagles and the Blind River Beavers as part of the NOJHL Showcase Tournament. The tournament will feature talent scouts from the NHL, NCAA, OHL and Canadian universities.
The Jr. Wolves next home game will be Wednesday Jan. 14 against the first place North Bay Skyhawks.
