Kershaw nominated nine times for Sudbury sports awards

Canadian nordic ski team member Devon Kershaw has broken a record by being nominated nine times for awards at the Sudbury House of Kin Sports Celebrity Dinner and Awards.

Kershaw will represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver next February. He has been nominated six times for the amateur elite athlete award, and three times before that for the amateur male award.

The 41st annual celebrity dinner and awards will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at the Caruso Club.

Other awards presented at the event include: Amateur Male, Amateur Female, Professional, Amateur Import, Fans' Choice and the Bill Roman Administration, as well as the Joe Drago Coach of the Year and the Sheridan Family Team of the Year.

As well as the nine awards, there will be 10 individuals inducted into Sudbury's Sports Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2009 includes fellow basketball coaches Mary Collinson and Mitch Lalonde, paddler Joe Derochie, longtime minor hockey board member Bev McIver, wrestler Matti Jutila, badminton player Lucio Fabris, retired NHL players Doug Mohns and Brian Savage, longtime marathon runner Dr. Ron Wallingford and the late Roy Pella, a Commonwealth Games discus silver medalist in 1954.

Tickets are now on sale at the House of Kin (1889 Regent St.) or by telephoning 522-3600. The cost is $45 for adults and $20 for childern under the age of 10.

The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and major awards/hall of fame inductions at 7:30 p.m.

This year's master of ceremonies will be longtime radio and television personality Gary Beach.
