Laurentian Voyageurs men's basketball guard Paul Kovacs and women's swimmer Kyleigh Commito have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar Athletes of the Week for the period of Jan. 20-26.

Kovacs (Barrie, Ont.) was the leading scorer for the Voyageurs over the weekend as he poured in 35 points in two games. On Friday, Jan. 23 against Toronto, Kovacs led the team with 14 points and added four rebounds as the Voyageurs fell to the Blues 84-63.

Kovacs shot 4-10 for the Voyageurs, who trailed by just six at halftime. A poor third quarter, which saw the team be outscored 20-5, was the difference in the game.

On Saturday, Jan. 24 against Ryerson, Kovacs saw himself matched up against Boris Bakovic (Toronto), who led the OUA in scoring last season. Kovacs had 22 points and three rebounds for the Voyageurs who eventually lost to the Rams 104-83. Kovacs is a fourth year sports and physical education major.

Commito (Sudbury, Ont.) put in a pair of strong performances in the pool this weekend at a pair of meets in Waterloo and in Hamilton. On Saturday, Jan. 24 at a quad meet in Waterloo, Commito won her first of three gold medals on the weekend in the women's four by 200 metre freestyle relay. She followed that performance up with a pair of wins in a tri meet on Sunday, Jan. 25 in Hamilton.

Her first win on Sunday came in 300 metre freestyle race. Later on in the day, Commito would go on to win the 100 metre butterfly event. Commito is a third year history major.

Kovacs and the Laurentian Voyageurs men's basketball team will travel to Ottawa this weekend to take on the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees, who are still ranked number one and number two in the country, respectively.

The Voyageurs face the Gee-Gees on Friday, Jan. 30, and will match up against the Ravens on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Commito and the Laurentian Voyageurs men's and women's swimming teams have a couple of weeks to prepare for their own trip to Ottawa to compete in the OUA championships from Friday, Feb. 6-8.
