The Laurentian Lady Vees basketball team is getting prepared to host their annual Battle for Breast Cancer on Saturday, Jan. 17 when the host they Ottawa Gee-Gees. The event is part of a CIS wide effort to raise over $100,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation that was spearheaded by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

This year will mark the second year in a row that schools across the CIS have dedicated a home game to the cause.

The "Shoot for the Cure", as it has been named on the national level raised over $50,000 a year ago and aims to double the donation in 2009. Laurentian was an integral part of that donation, as the small school raised over $2,000 last year.

This year the Lady Vees basketball team has taken the fundraising to a new level. Led by a committee of veterans on the team, they have put in countless hours trying come up with ways to raise funds.

Projects that have taken place so far include, designing a t-shirts with the phrase Pink Army and various slogans, and selling them at a cost of $15, with all proceeds going to the cause.

The Lady Vees also held bake sales before Christmas, which included cookies in the shape of pink ribbons. Finally they went into a residence and cooked a spaghetti supper to save students from cooking dinner during the exam period.

Fundraising efforts do not stop there; the t-shirts will continue to be sold through the game and throughout the season. On Saturday there will a silent auction, along with ticket sales proceeds will go to this worthy cause.

Saturday's game will also feature special guest anthem singer Jim Silva, morning host on Sudbury radio station Big Daddy 103.9 FM, and a giant game of musical chairs at halftime, where anyone wearing pink is eligible to join in on!

"We are very proud to be involved in such a worthy cause," said Lady Vees fourth year forward Darrah Bumstead in a release. "This is something that affects so many families; we want to help out however we can."

To support the Lady Vees in their quest to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation; shirts are available at the Laurentian Athletics office for a cost of $15 and will be sold at Saturday night's game, ticket sales on Saturday will also be donated.

Spectators are encouraged wear pink as they cheer on the  Lady Vees while supporting the cause as they take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Ben Avery Gym.
