The Laurentian Lady Vees fell short to the seventh nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees 1-0. Ottawa's lone goal was scored by Ottawa's Elise Desjardins. Laurentian's Meghan Hoffberg stopped 8 shots in the loss.
Ottawa controlled the first half and were able to capitalize off one of their 7 corner kicks.
The corner led to a scramble in front, where Desjardins (Ottawa) was able to tap the ball in for the Gee-Gees first and only goal. After the goal Laurentian was able to even out possession.
The momentum led to a breakaway chance in the 42nd minute, where Lisa Watson (Newmarket, Ont) was sent in alone, only to be stopped by Ottawa's keeper, Jess Charron (Ottawa).
The second half saw many chances from each team. In the 61st minute, Hoffberg made two huge saves on a breakaway from one of Ottawa's forwards.
Later on, it seemed Watson had finally tied the game, but the goal was called back because of an offside.
In the 73rd minute, Laurentian was awarded a free kick just outside of the box. The Gee-Gees goalkeeper made a finger tip save off a shot fired towards the top of the net by Leanne Adams (Mississauga, Ont).
The Lady Vees' head coach Rob Gallo was proud of his team's effort, "I was really excited about how the girls came back and fought to take control of the game," he said, in a release.
Gallo also said that he was looking forward to working hard this week, hoping to pick up 6 points in next weeks matches.
The Lady Vees will look to regroup for the upcoming home game on September 13, against the RMC Paladins.
The game is also the 3rd annual Jamieson Natural Sources Kick for the Cure. Kick off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at the Laurentian Soccer Field.
