The Laurentian Voyageurs and Lady Vees got into the Christmas spirit by giving back to the community to start the holiday season. The athletes participated in the Sudbury Manitoulin Children's Aid Society Angel Tree Program.

For the second consecutive year, the program was co-ordinated through Laurentian's Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). Members of each of the varsity teams sit on the council and discuss how the student athletes can become more involved in their community. The Voyageurs are proud to be able to contribute to a worthy cause such as the angel tree program and are happy to be involved with the Children's Aid Society, a press release stated.

The members of the council took it upon themselves to consult with their teams and bring a smile to a child's face on Christmas morning. Each child supplied a wish list and it was up to the athletes to play Santa Claus and make those wishes come true.

"During this special time of year, it brings us joy to know we can bring a smile to a child's face," said athletic director Peter Helstrom in the release. "We are really proud of our athletes who took it upon themselves to get involved in helping out in our community."

The Laurentian teams are on hiatus for the month of December, as they turn to the books for exams, and enjoy some holiday time. The basketball teams return to the hardwood in Kingston on Jan. 9 and 10, as they take on the RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels. They return to action in Sudbury, with the Lady Vees hosting another charity event - the Battle for Breast Cancer - on Jan. 16 when they take on the Carleton Ravens at 6 p.m. in the Ben Avery Gym.

The Nordic Ski teams will get their season under way when they travel to North Bay on Jan. 17 and 18. Curling will make its varsity debut as the team competes in the East Sectional in Waterloo on Jan. 17 and 18. The Aqua Vees will be back in the pool on Jan. 24 when they compete in a quad meet at Wilfred Laurier University, and a tri-meet hosted by McMaster on Jan. 25.

The Laurentian Athletic Department and student athletes would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and all the best in the new year, the press release stated.
