An impressive 400 metre dash secured Lucas Mrozewski the best local performance of the day, as the 2016 OFSAA Track & Field Championships kicked off Thursday in Windsor.

Taking more than a second off his 54+ time posted in capturing gold at both the SDSSAA and NOSSA meets, the Lo-Ellen midget finished fourth in his heat in a time of 52.86, good for seventh overall in a field of 24 athletes, and a spot in the final slotted for Friday afternoon.

Mrozewski was the only Sudbury and area athlete who managed to crack the top ten on Day 1 of OFSAA, though a handful were within shouting distance.

Lockerby Composite junior triple jump champion Harmony Martel overcame a silver medal winning performance at the SDSSAA meet to leap all the way to 11th place in the province, soaring 10.51 metres, or roughly half a meter better than at the city event.

Confederation Chargers' midget shot putter Danny Neelands continued to improve in leaps and bounds, sliding into 12th place overall in his first appearance at the all-Ontario meet. After winning the city title with a toss of 10.99 metres, and extending out to 12.01m a week later at NOSSA, Neelands added almost another full metre in recording a throw of 12.99 metres in Windsor.

Twelfth place was also where they Lo-Ellen midget boys 4 X 100m relay team would rank, as Mrozewski partnered with Colin Therrien, Ethan Hall and Connor Jermyn, crossing the line in 47.66 seconds.

After setting a new SDSSAA record with a time of 4:32.79 in the 1500m in mid-May, Augustin Marks de Chabris of Lo-Ellen shaved almost ten full seconds off by the time provincials rolled around, clocking in at 4:22.82 yesterday, good for 14th place in the midget boys race.

Teammate Brendan Costello of the Knights also gave himself a nice OFSAA send-off, running a personal best time of 4:09.35 in the senior boys 1500m, good for 17th place.
