Local atheletes shine

In swimming, the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club went to the 2006 Ontario Long Course Championships last weekend looking to make some noise and did they ever. The group of six swimmers brought home five medals overall.

In swimming, the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club went to the 2006 Ontario Long Course Championships last weekend looking to make some noise and did they ever.

The group of six swimmers brought home five medals overall.Kelly Hotta led the charge by collecting three medals. She won gold in the 50-m fly, silver in the 100-m fly and bronze in the 50-m freestyle.

Jordan Hotta earned bronze in the 100-m and 200-m breaststroke. Overall, the club had nine Top 8 finishes at the event.

In track and field, Elijah Allen of the Dharma Sports Science Group Athletics Club put on a clinic at the recent 2006 North American Indigenous Games in Colorado by harvesting an impressive collection of medals.

Allen took gold in the 100-metre dash, long jump and triple jump. He took the silver in the 200-m dash. Allen also set personal best times in each event. Allen will take his athletic act to York University next year.

In the squared circle, the Rayside-Balfour Wrestling Club marched into the Canada Cup tournament this past weekend in Guelph and walked away with some hardware.

Jean Marc Lalonde finished with the best results of the six-member squad, taking bronze. Lalonde went 4-1, which included beating two OFSAA champions and one national champion.

Jenna Howard also took bronze.

Diana Ford finished sixth, going 2-3. Sheldon Burton finished fourth, going 2-2. Dylan Byrnes finished fourth.
