Local Jiu-Jitsu team medals at national tournament

The Sudbury Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy took its competition team to the Toronto Jiu-Jitsu Classic tournament on Aug. 9 at Ryerson University. The Sudbury grapplers brought three medals back from the tournament.

The Sudbury Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy took its competition team to the Toronto Jiu-Jitsu Classic tournament on Aug. 9 at Ryerson University. The Sudbury grapplers brought three medals back from the tournament.

Josh Tonnos took the gold in the blue belt medium heavyweight division. Guy Poulin took bronze in the blue belt featherweight division, and Kevin Kroft won bronze in the white belt super heavyweight division.

The Toronto Jiu-Jitsu Classic showcased the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and will be aired on The Fight Network. It will also appear in Gracie Magazine, a news leader in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

According to a press release, this competition readies competitors for the highest level of international competition by adhering to the international rules, regulations, and standards set by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

“It gave Sudbury Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students a chance to display the skills they have been training here in Sudbury at a national level,” the release stated.
