The Cambrian College womens' basketball team earned a bronze medal at the Canadian College Athletics Association (CCAA) volleyball championships in Quebec City last weekend.

The Golden Shield were ranked sixth in the country for the tournament. Cambrian defeated Grand Prairie, the number three seed, in the bronze medal match three sets to one.

Players Lisa Martin and Kristen Martel were named first team All-Canadians. Laura Fowler made the second All-Canadian squad.

Seven local skaters showed their pride and power this past weekend at Countryside Arena during the 2005 Ontario Short Track Speed Skating Championships. One hundred and eighty-nine skaters from across the province participated in Sudbury for a shot at making Team Ontario to compete in the North American Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Milwaukee, Wisc.

Sudbury's Stephan Ayotte had a memorable performance as he won the 500-metre event and also had strong showings in three other events, which lead him to win the overall silver in the juvenile boys division.

Ayotte was also selected to be a member of Team Ontario and will now travel with the squad to Milwaukee.

Other notable performances included: Kaelyn Pitre, seventh in peewee girls, Kelsey Pitre, seventh in bantam girls, Keegan Pitre, fifth in bantam boys, Jared Manchuk, fifth in peewee boys, Caleb Laaper, 15th in midget boys and Amber Ranich, eight in juvenile girls.

This was the first time an Ontario Speed Skating event was hosted by Sudbury, and the kids showed the province this town is made up of true champions.

Five members of the Sudbury Skating Club are off to the Trillium Cup and the Trillium Star Skate events in Kitchener this weekend at the RIM Park Waterloo.

Each skater had to qualify at earlier Ontario skating events throughout the season in order to go to the Trillium events.
Representing Sudbury are Erika Harris, 15, Jazmine Roy, 13, Brittany Tremblay, 11, Danielle Coulombe, 11, and Isabelle Sonier, 8.

Legendary Hockey Night in Canada and CBC Sports host Ron MacLean will be in Sudbury on Thursday, May 26 at the Holiday Inn Hotel for the first annual Laurentian University Athletics Celebrity Sports Luncheon.

It was the final event of the year for the Ice Angels, and the coaches couldn't be happier with the results and the hard work put forth by the girls all
season.
