A pair of local lifters used the recent November Hybrid event hosted at Laurentian University to qualify for the Ontario Senior Weightlifting Championships next spring.
Both Thomas Hums and Kyle McDermid exceeded the 225kg standard in the 77kg weight class, with both gentlemen finishing with an aggregate lift total of 230 kilos.
McDermid slowly inched his way up in the snatch event, successfully hoisting 95kg, 100kg and 105kg lifts, and nailing 125kg with his first attempt in the clean and jerk. Hums took the opposite approach, hitting 105kg with his first lift in the snatch, and the improving from 120kg to 125kg on his first two cracks at the clean and jerk.
A total of ten competitors took part in the meet, with the bulk representing the Voyageur Weightlifting Club, joined by a handful of entries from Cross-Fit Sudbury and the Sudbury Weightlifting Club.
The next scheduled competition for local lifters comes at the end of February, when Laurentian will again serve as the host site, with the group looking at doing one more event out of town prior to provincials.
