LU lacrosse marks double loss on the road

The opening weekend for the Laurentian Voyageurs men's lacrosse team has left the group winless, falling 12-3 to the Western Mustangs on Sept. 19 in London, and losing 14-7 to the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks on Sept. 20 in Waterloo.

Rookie Clint Lamarsh was a stand-out on the team, scoring twice for the Voyageurs in a losing cause against the Mustangs, and netting a hat trick the following day against the Hawks.

Casey Swann added another marker for the Sudbury team in the first game. The remaining goals in Sunday's game were scored by Swann, Blaine Syme, Dustin Dube and Derrick Gordon.

Head coach George Sheppard attributed the losses to injuries, which left the Voyageurs short-benched at both games.

“We were really short because of injuries,” he said. “The Mustangs had 10 or 12 more guys than us and were able to stay fresh. We just ran out of gas.”

Sheppard added too many mistakes cost the team on Sunday.

“Unfortunately we made some mistakes and our short bench proved to cost us in the long run.”

The Voyageurs (0-2) will be back in action on Sept. 25 as they host the Guelph Gryphons at Hillcrest Field in Lively, starting at 4 p.m. Laurentian will play three games next weekend as they will take on Guelph again on Sept. 26 at 12 p.m. and McMaster on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. All games take place at Hillcrest Field.
