Marymount's Ryan Faiella has plenty of energy and she knows how to burn it off.

The rambunctious multi-sport athlete thrives on competition and loves the heat of the battle.

Faiella always seems to be in perpetual motion. She just wrapped up her basketball season and is getting ready to take on cross-country and downhill skiing, swimming and when the snow melts, soccer in the new year.

Faiella's basketball season was one to remember as she lead Marymount to a perfect 8-0 record and a city championship.

Ryan Faiella credits playing sports for helping her become more confident and outgoing.
She also lead all senior girls' Division II players in scoring with 123.

"I thought everyone on the team improved over the season," said the 17-year-old. "There was always a lot of enthusiasm at our practices and games. Overall, I thought we did well."

The Regals had set a goal to make it to the A OFSAA Championship, which they did and made everyone proud.

"It was the first time a Marymount basketball team ever went to an OFSAA championship," said the Grade 12 student. "It was exciting and overwhelming for all of us. It was different...playing the best teams in the province. A lot of the girls on the team hadn't played a lot of basketball and it gave them a real insight into the competition from down south."

Faiella is a big presence at Marymount.

"Ryan is a great leader," said assistant basketball coach John Beaton. "She provides good examples for younger kids to follow. On the team, she was counted on to score points and on defence, she was a great rebounder. Ryan's also a good student and helps coach the elementary team. She gets involved in school activities and life. Ryan's a good kid and has been a big part of the school the whole time she has been here."

Playing high school sports has made Faiella a confident young adult.

"It's helped me become less timid," said the player. "When I started high school, I was so shy. Now, I am outgoing and it's easier for me to take charge of things. It's also brought out a lot more leadership skills in me. If I didn't play sports, I certainly wouldn't be the person I am today."

"I don't like sitting around," said Faiella. "Growing up...I've always played sports. I love meeting new people and it's always helped me blow off stress from school."

Faiella has applied to Laurentian, Brock and Trent. Faiella hopes to continue her basketball career at the next level. She knows what she wants to do in life.

"I eventually hope to be a high school teacher and coach basketball or soccer in the community."
