Six Sudbury-area army cadets are among 75 cadet biathletes from across the province scheduled to compete in the Central Region Cadet Biathlon this weekend, Feb. 14-15.

The competition will take place at the Algoma Rod & Gun Club in Sault Ste. Marie.

The cadets make up three area teams - Eastern, Central and Northern - from Royal Canadian Sea Cadet, Army Cadet, and Air Cadet Corps and Squadrons from throughout Ontario.

On Saturday, three-member male and female teams, chosen as a result of their standings in recent area competitions, will compete in an 18 km relay race. Each member of the teams will make three loops of the two km trail, separated by bouts of five-to-eight-round prone marksmanship.

Individual competition takes place Sunday for both males and females. The competitors will undertake four ski loops totalling up to eight km of trail, interspersed with three bouts of five-round marksmanship in the prone position.

Top competitors will represent Central Region (comprising most of Ontario east of Thunder Bay) at the annual National Cadet Biathlon Competition, to be held in Valcartier, Que. next month, competing against cadet teams from across Canada.

The Canadian cadet program is the preeminent national youth organization in Canada, sponsored in partnership among the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces and the civilian Navy, Army and Air Cadet Leagues of Canada.
