Aided by a little local knowledge, travelers and locals alike have a new map source that will make backcountry travel and outdoor adventure a whole lot easier.

The new Northeastern Ontario Backroad Mapbook graphically displays the endless array of logging roads, canoe routes, fishing spots, camping opportunities and trail systems of the region in detail and clarity not found on any other map source, according to a press release.

But expanding north proved to be a little more challenging for Backroads than first perceived, authors of the book said. “As people know, there simply is not as much published information on the north as there is in the south. You need people who live and play in the area to help.”

This is where Jason Marleau stepped in.

“Being originally from Sudbury, I have been exploring the region for fishing, camping and canoeing since I was a young boy,” said Marleau, an author/researcher with Backroad Mapbooks.

“Until now, there wasn’t anything that did it all for you as a map and information source for northern Ontario. Our goal is to provide an up-to-date and detailed product that not only shows the topography of the region, but also includes information such as trails, fish species and other points of interest. This formula has been a big hit with the people in the north.”

It is actually the second edition of the Northeastern Ontario Backroad Mapbook. In addition to updating and expanding the coverage of the maps, the new mapbook has a cleaner, easier to read look and also includes more information on the great outdoors, the press release stated.

“Being from up here, you always feel that connection and I still travel throughout the region regularly for outdoor fun,” Marleau said. “It’s my connection to the north that has really driven me, and, in turn, the company to make this mapbook the absolute best it can be.”
