Sudbury's Jeff Buttle and Devon Kershaw
were in action today at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy, but
neither came away with any medals.
In cross-country skiing, Kershaw, 23, and his
partner George Grey of Rossland, B.C., failed to qualify for
the final heat of the men's team pursuit. The pair placed
sixth in the semi-final with a time of 17:31.2, needing at
least a fifth place finish to advance.
Fortunately, Kershaw has four more chances at
Olympic glory. He competes Feb. 17 in the 15 km classic, Feb.
19 in the four by 10 relay, Feb. 22 in the individual sprint
race and Feb. 26 in the 50 km free race.
Buttle, a member of the Canadian men's
figure skating team, took to the ice for the first time today
in the short program competition. Final results of the
competition were unavailable as of Sudbury Today's press
time.
He has a chance for redemption Feb. 16 when
he performs his long program.
Hockey player and Sudbury native Todd
Bertuzzi will play his first Olympic game against Italy
tomorrow (Wednesday).
