We're in the midst of the coldest streak of weather all winter, but one OHL player is creating a heat wave with his torrid play.
London's Patrick Kane is on the war path.
The slick winger is on fire and rising up the scoring charts
with his Number-One single called "Scoring a lot of Goals".
Kane has a nine-game goal scoring streak going where he has
torched goalies for 17 goals. It's not a misprint. This kid
has 17 goals in his last nine straight games. It's
ridiculous for a player of his age (18) to be scoring at such a
wild pace.
Oh, and it gets better. Kane is in the middle of a 12-game
point scoring streak in which he has recorded 19 goals and 34
points.
With each passing week, Kane climbs the NHL Draft rankings.
There has been some talk he could go first overall depending on
what team picks first.
Needless to say, Kane leads all freshmen scorers in the OHL
with 45 goals and 101 points in just 44 games.
Sudbury Wolves centre Nick Foligno has set a new career high
for goals and points in a single season. By registering a goal
and an assists during a 3-0 win over Barrie last weekend,
Foligno surpassed last season's totals of 24 goals and 70
points in 65 games. In 50 games so far this season, Foligno has
25 goals and 71 points.
From high scoring forwards to big shooting defencemen,
let's take a look at some defenders who know how to put the
puck in the net.
Sault Ste. Marie's Josh Godfrey has come out of nowhere
this season to lead all OHL defencemen in goal scoring.
Godfrey has 21 goals in 51 games. Owen Sound's Bobby
Sanguinetti is second with 20.
Godfrey's exploits are a bit unexpected. In his first two
seasons, Godfrey played 81 games and had just eight goals and
25 points.
He's smashed all his personal best marks this year with 42
points overall.
Now, let's look at the hottest team in the OHL, the
Belleville Bulls.
This team was pegged to be a serious contender at the start of
the season. Yet, they got off to a sluggish start and never
lived up to their potential until now.
The Bulls have won eight straight games and looking every bit
like a top dog hungry for a championship win.
Their recent winning streak has now pushed them to second place
overall in the Eastern Conference standings. With plenty of
scoring, a big and talented defence corps and a razor sharp
Number-one goalie, the Bulls have the ingredients to make a
long run this season in the playoffs.
Bulls' forward Tyler Donati has been setting the pace
during the winning streak. He's averaging
three-points-per-game over the eight-game span with 10 goals
and 24 points. It no wonder he leads the OHL in scoring with
106 points.
With all these tidbits of high scoring players, does it make
you wonder if anyone is doing anything to try and stop goals
from being scored?
The answer is yes and comes in the form of Mississauga
defenceman Alex Pietrangelo.
The lanky rookie blueliner has done nothing but impress the
hockey world with his skill and poise.
In 50 games, the six-foot-three defender has three goals and 42
points, but, more importantly, leads the OHL with a +38 rating.
It's unreal for a kid who just turned 17 to be leading the
OHL in plus/minus at the age of 17 and a credit to his true
potential.
