Whitewater Lake in Azilda is the fishing destination for serious tournament fishers.
On July 4, up to 100 boats and 200 men, women and children will take part in the annual Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC) Pike Derby. The tournament takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
At least one team member (a team is defined as two persons per boat) must be 19 years of age or older. A team member should attend the orientation/registration meeting on July 3rd at the Club D’Age D’or in Azilda.
Those who aren't anglers can still help out by sponsoring the registration for child cancer survivors. The sponsorship provides the families with a stress-free day of fun and an opportunity for children to forget about their struggles for a while.
New this year, Ambrosia Jewelers is donating a dare-devil lure made of rubies and diamonds valued at $1,500, which will be drawn on July 4 as part of the prize presentations. The piece can be viewed at Ambrosia Jewelers until the derby.
All proceeds go to the NOFCC. The organization provides assistance to families living in northern Ontario with an area that expands north to Timmins and Kapuskasing, south to Parry Sound, east to North Bay, west to Sault Ste. Marie and all areas in between.
Registration forms, with full rules, can be picked up at Pro Bait & Tackle on the Kingsway, Ramakko's Tackle World on Loach's Road, Trapper John's Bait & Tackle on Notre Dame in Azilda, or Ambrosia Jewelers on Lasalle Boulevard. The cost to enter the tournament is $200 per team.
