Saluting our athletes

Hard work, sweat and sometimes tears; three elements found in most sports organizations and teams.  The dedication of many Greater Sudbury athletes was recognized recently in awards ceremonies and championships.

Hard work, sweat and sometimes tears; three elements found in most sports organizations and teams.  The dedication of many Greater Sudbury athletes was recognized recently in awards ceremonies and championships.  Here are just a few:

Hockey

Individual team awards were handed out recently by the Sudbury Junior Wolves.

Goalie Paul Pidutti hauled in three awards: Lowest Goals Against Average, Scholastic Player of the Year and NOJHL Playoff MVP.

Captain Brian McGarry took home the Top Scorer and Team MVP Awards.

The Most Sportsmanlike Award went to Jamie Dallaire. Jordan Cheechoo and Brenden Biedermann were named the Most Underrated Players.

Nick Heins and Stephen Miller copped the Hardest Worker honours. Heins was also named the Player's Player Award. Andrew Beuman took the Most Improved Award. The Best Rookie Award went to Justin Jodouin. Rob Bonhomme was named Best Defenceman. Goalie Darren Rowlandson was awarded the Dudley Hewitt MVP honours.  

As a team, the Junior Wolves won the Paul Lizotte Fuels Challenge Cup by beating the North Bay Skyhawks in their regular season series.

Sudbury also won the NOJHL Championship and were finalists at the Dudley Hewitt Cup.

Boxing

Ontario National Training Centre (ONTC) boxers recently showed they have the winning spirit by taking two golds and one silver at the annual McGibbon Gloves Provincial Championships in St. Catharines.

The event was designed for provincial boxers at the novice level.

Brenden Wafer took gold in the 54-kilogram class. Wafer, a Lansdowne Public School student, boxed twice to earn his gold medal. To win, Wafer beat Tyler Gilley from Brampton. Wafer won by the final score of 27 to 16.

Brock Boyd won gold in the 50-kilogram division. Boyd, a Lockerby student, defeated Josh O'Reilly of Hamilton in the final bout by outclassment in the second round. Outclassment is when one opponent gets ahead by 15 points of another boxer.

Justin Bonhomme took home silver in the 81-kilogram category. Bonhomme, a Lasalle Secondary student, lost in the final to the reigning Canadian champion Steven Franjic.

Varsity sports

The Cambrian College Athletics department recently dished out their annual hardware to top athletes.

Cross-country runner Amanda Kosmerly was named the Female Athlete of the Year.

Badminton star Ryan Rows was named the Male Athlete of the Year.

Cross-country running coach Jack Kosmerly was awarded the Coach of the Year honours.

The Vern Down Memorial Bursary award went to Carolyn Craig-Paul and Melissa Braido.

Individual Team MVP awards went to Amanda Kosmerly (cross-country), Rows and Kathryn Bobbie (badminton), Erin Persi (women's soccer), Eric Penn (men's soccer), James Kershaw (men's volleyball), Laura Fowler (women's volleyball) and Krista De Boer (women's fastball).
