Skate exchange hits the ice

Four years ago, a desire to see kids engaged in physical activity during the long winter months became the driving force behind the skate exchange.

The Human League, in partnership with the Lockerby Legion, the city of Greater Sudbury and the health unit, is accepting donations of gently used skates for the fourth annual skate exchange.

"Since so much of our season is winter, if we could help families get out in the winter that's where we should start," said Sandra Maitland, PLAY coordinator with the human league.

Maitland said more than 100 pairs of skates exchange hands each year. Play It Again Sports has also donated a large number of skates to the exchange and is also providing free skate sharpening service for the exchange.

Residents can drop off their used skates at the Farmer's Market on Elm St. between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday Dec. 3, 10 and 17.

Skates can be picked up, free of charge, from 10 am to noon at the Lockerby Legion Dec. 7, 10, 21, Feb. 18 and March 4.
