After a tough 2-0 loss to Rochester in their season opener,
the Sudbury Canadians are hoping to charge up their offence
against the visiting Vermont Voltage today in United Soccer
League action.
Game time is 2 pm and the battle will unfold at the Kinsmen
soccer field in Lively.
The key to turning on the success lies in blasting goals
into the opposing team's net.
"We have to generate more scoring opportunities for our top
two strikers, Meagan Schutt and Thalia Playford," said head
coach Emile Malvaso. "If we can get them the ball in the right
positions, we can really capitalize with the experience those
two NCAA players have."
Sudbury fell twice to Vermont last season, a close and
hard-fought 1-0 loss at home and a 4-1 loss on the road.
"Vermont is essentially the same team from last year," said
Malvaso. "So there should be no surprises to our players."
Despite dropping a 2-0 decision to Rochester, Malvaso saw a
bright silver lining from the defeat.
"The girls learned to play with one another," said the bench
boss. "There's a couple of new faces on our team and has made a
different formation on our team. As games go on, they will
actually get better. We have a system down and we should be
able to attack in a better manner."
The mid-field is going to be under pressure to perform well,
but the Canadians know it will round into form."Our challenge
this season is going to be the midfield because there's some
players playing in new positions," said Malvaso. "I think they
will step up and help us dominate in the middle. Hopefully it
will start with Vermont."
Sudbury doesn't mind playing in Lively, especially since it
does give them the chance to play in different parts of Greater
Sudbury, and maybe even attract more fans. Fans can expect a
solid game from the Canadians against Vermont.
"Lively is great," said Malvaso. "I think we can turn that 1-0 loss, from last year against this team, into a win."
