Sudbury boy dominates on the water

Sudbury's Gordie Croteau won the gold medal in the men's slalom event for ages 35 and over on Sunday at the World Barefoot Water Skiing Championships at Lake Silverado in Adna, Washington, then added a bronze in jump and helped Canada to the team bronze.

In men's 35 and over, Croteau took the slalom event for his second world title in a row.  Two years ago he won the tricks competition in the same age group.  He was also third in jump and combined forces with Don Schwartz of Blue River, B.C., and Kim Hall-Bourne of Manotick, Ont., for bronze in the team event.

"I was the first one up in the final and I put the pressure on the others with a great run," said Croteau, 39, who lives and works in Arizona. "I relied on my usual strategy: to go clean and fast. The jump medal though was a big surprise for me."

Croteau was also fifth overall, Schwartz ninth and Cory Rowland of Calgary thirteenth.

Canada was sixth in the junior team event.
