Both teams brought their A-games when the Los Angeles Ignite visited the Sudbury Five for a Sudbury Saturday Night matchup on April 14, but it was the hometowners who came out on top in this one.

Helping the Five across the finish line were strong performances from Ja’Myrin Jackson with 31 points in the game, A.J. Mosby with 19 points and Duane Notice, with 18 points in the game.

Los Angeles came out strong and held a lead by a score of 25-22 after the first quarter of play, thanks in large part to the play of both J.T. Terrell and Warren Helligar, who both scored 17 points in the game for the Ignite.

The Sudbury Five came back to win the second quarter by scoring 30 points to Los Angeles’ 24, and giving the locals a 52-49 lead at halftime.

Los Angeles kept the game close coming out of the halftime break, and only trailed the Five by a score of 83-77 thanks to solid performances from Marcus Bell (27 points in the game) and Ty Glover (14 points).

Sudbury closed out the win with a strong 29-point fourth quarter to close out a 112-102 victory over the Los Angeles Ignite.

Reflecting on the game, Notice said afterwards the Five won by being ready.

“We did a great job of preparing,” he said. “They did what they were supposed to do. Some guys hit some shots that we weren’t expecting, especially in the second half. But for the most part guys were just shooting to the scout. For us, it was just basketball.”

Asked about the Five’s improved defense in this game, Notice said it’s all about teamwork.

“I think we’re just buying in. I think early in the season it would be a situation where we had four out of five guys on defence locked in, or three out of five, or two out of five, or one out of five,” he said. “We’re starting to have all five guys on the same page, communicating, playing with heart, effort, and I think it’s starting to show.”

Attitude had a lot to do with Saturday’s win, said Sudbury Five Player Development Coach Michael Brovac.

“Our attitude was very, very locked in,” he said. “We were very present, we were very grounded, and I think that’s why we were able to bounce back.”

With the win, the Sudbury Five now hold a record of 14 wins and 11 losses with six games remaining in the regular season.

The Sudbury Five take to the court this afternoon for their final home game of the regular season, with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m.
