The high school sports season is in full swing with athletes pouring every last drop of energy into becoming one of the best in Greater Sudbury. Here's an overall look into the high school loop, setting up big games, reliving top performances and other notes of interest.
A+ Performer
St. Benedict Bears tailback Joey Martelacci. The speedy player
was a one-man wrecking crew last week against bitter rival
Lo-Ellen Park. Martelacci romped for 278 yards on 24 rushes and
scored four touchdowns to lead St. Benedict to a 28-23 victory
over the Knights.
Big Games
Wednesday:
Senior boys' volleyball, Division A: Lo-Ellen hosts Lasalle at
6:30 pm. Lo-Ellen started the season by going 2-0 and will look
to maintain perfection. Macdonald Cartier hosts St. Charles,
while Notre-Dame hosts Chelmsford in the other match ups. Games
start at 6:30 pm.
Senior girls' flag football, Division A: St. Charles hosts
Lo-Ellen at 4:30 pm. It's the first game of 2007 for both
teams, so expect sparks to fly.
Senior girls' basketball, Division Two: It's a full night of
action as four games take the spotlight. At 5 pm, Marymount
hosts Chelmsford and Sacre-Coeur welcomes Champlain. At 6:30
pm, St. Benedict hosts Bishop Carter, while Sudbury Secondary
welcomes St. Charles.
Thursday:
It's a big day for senior boys' football. The marquee match
features Lockerby at St. Benedict at 7:30 pm. Both teams are
bonafide championship contenders and have started the season
2-0 and sit at the top of the standings. It's a rematch from
last year's semi final in which St. Benedict beat Lockerby
25-16. This could be a possible city championship preview.
Earlier in the day, at 4:30 pm, Lo-Ellen hosts Lasalle.
Lo-Ellen (1-1) is looking to get back on the winning track
after losing a big game last week to St. Benedict at home.
Lasalle (0-2) is just looking for their first win of the
season.
Girls' basketball: In junior Division I Action, Notre-Dame
hosts Lockerby at 6:30 pm. It's Notre-Dame's first game of the
year and they'll want to start with a bang. In midget girls'
action at 5 pm, Lasalle hosts St. Charles, Lively welcomes
Lo-Ellen and Notre-dame hosts Lockerby. In senior girls'
Division I action, Lo-Ellen hosts L'Horizon at 5 pm, while
Notre-Dame welcomes Lockerby at 8 pm.
