The Sudbury Wildcats girls' hockey team will introduce CBC's Hockey Night In Canada (HNIC) to millions of viewers across Canada on March 8.

The introduction is part of the new pre-game show, Scotiabank Hockey Tonight.

The Wildcats were one of 19 teams selected from more than 150 applicants for the Scotiabank Hockey Tonight Kids Program.

The Wildcats application highlighted their love for hockey and the team's strong spirit and cohesiveness.

"Team play and hard work are the calling cards of the Wildcats," head coach Felix Piro said in a news release. "The work ethic of the Wildcats mirrors that of many other hockey teams born out of backyard rinks, playgrounds and arenas here on the rock in Sudbury. The town and the teams loves to watch Ron MacLean and Don Cherry on HNIC, so the Wildcats are thrilled to represent Sudbury minor hockey, Scotiabank and the CBC on HNIC."

Locally, Scotiabank, which sponsors the entire contest and show, was thrilled by the fact a local team earned a spot on HNIC.

"Scotiabank is tickled pink," Scotiabank Business Banking Centre Community Manager Steve Irwin said. "We're excited one of our local teams will be featured. Scotiabank gives back to communities and what better way than through hockey that includes kids."

The Wildcats should feel honoured they were picked.

"It's quite an achievement," Irwin said. "There's so few teams that get picked our of probably hundreds of applications. It's great for the team and Sudbury because it spotlights everything on a national venue."
