The Sudbury Five announced Tuesday that they will host their inaugural Senior High School Invitational basketball tournament on Jan. 17 and 18 at the Sudbury Arena.

The tournament is open to eight elite high school teams that have been invited to play from across Northern Ontario, including four teams from the Sudbury area (College Notre Dame, Lockerby, Lasalle and Lo-Ellen).

“The goal of this tournament is to give each participant an incredibly memorable experience and to provide a high-level tournament in Northern Ontario,” said Sudbury Five head coach Logan Stutz.

“This will give these players the opportunity to play on an NBA style court right here in the North.”

“We are very excited to be a part of the Five’s first tournament for high school athletes,” said Martin Nadeau, coach of the College Notre Dame boys’ basketball team.

“This is going to be great for the community and the world of basketball up North. We are extra proud to be participating as Five player Georges Serresse is an alumnus of ours and we can continue to support him and his teammates.”

The tournament will take place on Friday Jan. 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission will be $10 for the weekend or free with a valid ticket to either Friday or Sunday’s Sudbury Five games. Weekend passes will go on-sale at the Sudbury Arena Box Office on Friday at 10 a.m.

The participating teams will also be recognized at the Five’s game during the Friday night game at half time and each team will have one player that will represent them in a skills competition.

“This is only the beginning of this tournament and we are very excited to be able to build on it and continue to grow it next year with the goal of adding a girls team division,” said Stutz.
