Lady Vees' nordic skier Mary Thompson and men's basketball forward Alex Whiteman have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar Athletes of the Week for the period of Jan. 13-19.

Thompson (Woodstock, Ont.) had a strong showing this weekend as she led the Lady Vees nordic skiing team to a pair of third place team finishes. On Saturday, Jan. 17, Thompson finished second in the women's 10 kilometre classic race, giving her the first of two podium finishes.

Thompson finished the race with a time of 36:04.1. On Sunday, Jan. 18, Thompson placed third in the women's five kilometre freestyle event with a time of 17:21.9. Thompson is in her second year of the biology program.

Whiteman (North Vancouver, B.C.) performed well for the Voyageurs men's basketball team against the CIS #2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, Jan. 17, which earned him the award.

Whiteman scored a team-high 14 points and added a game-high 14 rebounds as the Voyageurs put in a strong effort, but fell to the Gee-Gees 83-64. Whiteman shot 5-15 from the field and pulled down seven of his 14 rebounds in the first quarter to record his second double-double of the season.

On Friday, Jan. 16, Whiteman had limited in minutes in the Voyageurs 110-58 loss to the Carleton Ravens. He scored two points and added three rebounds. Whiteman is in his fifth year of the history program.

Thompson will return to action in three weeks as the men's and women's nordic skiing teams prepare for the second OUA qualifier of the season on their home course at Laurentian University.

The first races are set for Saturday, Feb. 7 and the second races are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 8. Whiteman and his Voyageurs men's basketball team will hit the court again this weekend looking for their third win of the season.

On Friday, Jan. 23, the Voyageurs will take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and on Saturday, Jan. 24, they will take on the Ryerson Rams. Both games are scheduled for 8 p.m.
