Johnston, 16, has five provincial high school medals to her credit. She was competing at her first nationals event.

Johnston ran against girls who were up to three years older than her. She was .22 seconds off the selection pool for the World Junior Championships in China. Johnston was also set to race in the 200-m, but pulled out to due to a sore hamstring.

Rebecca Johnston powered her way to a bronze medal in the 400-metre at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships. Johnston, who trains under the guidance of the Track North Club, wasn't the only local athlete making noise at the junior championships.

Some of her teammates also enjoyed decent success.

Tiana Deck surprised many by taking fourth place overall in the long jump. Dan Gardiner took two Top Six finishes in the boys' long jump (sixth) and triple jump (fifth).

Andre Thibert also had a strong showing, taking seventh overall in the high jump.

The Dharma Sports Science Group sent two athletes, Elijah Allen and Celine Loyer. Allen enjoyed a huge meet, taking seventh overall in the boys' 110-m hurdles. Loyer finished 18th in the 100-m.
