Boxers from the Valley East Boxing Club scored some of their best results in recent memory at the Ontario Summer Games in Mississauga last week.

The event drew more than 3,500 athletes to participate in 27 sports and was the biggest provincial summer games to date.

Justin Labelle, 16- year-old Junior C novice boxer from the Valley East club competed in two different divisions and won a silver medal at 48 kg and gold at 46 kg.

In the 46 kg division where he took gold, Labelle previously had zero fights at that weight, while his opponent had six bouts worth of experience.

Brett Huard fought in the 66 kg Junior C division and the 15-year-old had two very close contests with more experienced opponents, ultimately dropping a 2-1 decision but winning a bronze medal.

Lance Chretien, an 18-year-old Valley East boxer, fought in the Youth Open division where he took gold.

“That was Lance's best performance, he won a 3-0 decision and demonstrated his superior boxing skills that took so many years of  hard work and dedication,” said Peter Yannacoureas, head coach, Valley East Boxing Club.

“Lance is the best technical boxer in the Sudbury area.”

In total, Valley East boxers brought home two golds, one silver and one bronze.
