Men's soccer
The Laurentian University Voyageurs will have their hands
full this weekend as they host Queen's University (Saturday,
noon) and Royal Military College (RMC) (Sunday, noon).
Queen's figures to be the tougher test as the squad went
undefeated in their first three games, going 2-0-1.
Laurentian failed to win a game in their first three contests,
going 0-1-1.
With a rookie-laden squad, a potent offence will not be the
Voyageurs' calling card.
The team failed to score in their first three games as well.
"The goals will be harder to come by this year due to our
rookie forwards' inexperience, but they're creating chances and
that's a good sign," said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "They
will come soon. The players need to be patient."
Winning this weekend would go a long way for the club's prospects.
Women's soccer
The LU Lady Vees also host Queen's and RMC this weekend at 2
pm on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Like the men, the women will face a real challenge in the
form of Queen's, which romped through their first three games,
winning all of them handily.
The Lady Vees will have to be aware of Queen's striker Eilish McConville, who has found her scoring touch early on.
McConville pumped in four goals during a 5-3 win over Trent
last week and her stand-out play could just be the start of
bigger and better things to come. In 2005, McConville
registered 11 goals in 12 matches.
Laurentian has been relying on their staunch defensive prowess so far this season. In their first four games, the Lady Vees allowed just one goal. The negative part is the squad only managed to score two goals, and that was in a 2-0 win over Ryerson last week. Expect more of the same defensive game from Laurentian this weekend.
