The Laurentian Voyageurs men's golf team recently held qualifying tryouts at the Idywylde Golf and Country Club. Thirteen players took part in the two-day event, with five returnees and eight rookies in the field. Three returning players — Max Kallio, John Atherton and Matt Bortolotto — qualified, while three rookies — Brennan Doyle, Scott Lavigne and Alex Lisowski — were able to play their way onto the team.

Atherton came to the Voyageurs from Toronto. He was able to post a two-day total of one-under par. The 2009 season will be Atherton's fourth on the team and second as captain.

Kallio, a native of Lively, is trying to continue his great play from over the summer after winning Lively Golf and Country Club's men's club championship. Kallio is entering his fifth year with the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Sudbury's Bortolotto — the 2008 team MVP — was able to make his way onto the team despite not playing to his potential. The team will look for him to rebound and continue his strong play from last year.

The Voyageurs head out on Thursday (Sept. 24) to participate in the Western Invitational in London, at the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club. The team will be in action the following day at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club, also in London.
