Voyageurs rookie and Charlottetown native Davor Alisic has been named the 2008 Junior Male Player of the Year by the Prince Edward Island Soccer Association. The yearly award was given out in November at an awards banquet held by the P.E.I. Soccer Association.

Alisic, played in nine regular season games for the Voyageurs, tallying the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Queen's in Kingston. The Voyageurs finished the season third in the OUA east conference. Alisic also found the back of the net in the OUA east quarter-final against Queen's in Sudbury - a game the Laurentian men would end up winning 2-0 to advance to play the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA east semifinal.

Anyone under the age of 18 and in the P.E.I. youth soccer system is eligible to win the award, meaning Alisic outperformed about 2,000 other junior soccer players in the province. In 2008, Alisic played for the Winsloe West Royalty, a club team in P.E.I., the Under-18 provincial team, as well as the Voyageurs. For the Royalty, he netted nine goals in only 12 games, leading the team in goals, and making him second in the entire league.

Alisic was a force scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory in the Provincial Under-18 final, enabling his team to advance to the nationals. While donning his provincial colours, Alisic scored four times, including three game-winners as P.E.I. posted a record of 3-1-1, good enough for fifth place. Alisic finished second in scoring in the tournament.

"It is definitely a great accomplishment and it's something that will motivate me for years to come," said Alisic in a release. "That being said, the players that I have played with and coaching that I have received have contributed greatly to my success."

Voyageurs' head coach Carlo Castrechino was proud of his newcomer. "I was very happy to hear that Davor was nominated for the award and to win it is certainly a great accomplishment. He is well-respected by his teammates and it has been a pleasure for me to be his coach. He was a nice surprise this year for us and we are certain that he will continue to be a valuable player for Laurentian for years to come," Castrechino said in the release.

Alisic will now turn to the books for the remainder of the school year. His teammates and he will also participate in an indoor soccer league while the snow covers the soccer pitches in Sudbury. The Voyageurs' soccer team will look to continue their success in 2009 and improve on a third place finish in the OUA east from this year.
