Wolves break losing streak

Posted by Sudbury Northern Life  The Sudbury Wolves broke out of their recent five-game losing streak Thursday night as the Wolves defeated division rival the Barrie Colts on the road by a final score of 7 to 3.

The Sudbury Wolves broke out of their recent five-game losing streak Thursday night as the Wolves defeated division rival the Barrie Colts on the road by a final score of 7 to 3.

The Wolves held off early pressure from the Colts in the opening frame, and were the first to get on the scoreboard midway through the first period on a goal by Eric O'Dell, and assisted by Daniel Maggio. The Wolves were outshot by the Colts 17 - 8 but would take a 1 - 0 lead into the first intermission.

The Wolves took complete control of the contest in the second period as they scored four straight goals to take a 5 - 0 lead. The first goal came right off the faceoff at the 0:54 minute mark on a shorthanded effort by Matt Dias with an assist from Gerome Giudice.

The Wolves then added goals from Kain Allicock, assisted by John McFarland and Dean Howard, Akim Aliu, assisted by Frankie Santini, and a second goal by Dias, assisted by Giudice and John Kurtz. The Colts were able to hit the back of the net near the end of the frame to cut the Wolves lead to 5-1.
 
Early in the third period, the Wolves picked up right were they left off with a goal by Marcus Foligno, assisted by Kyle Tarini and Maggio, and an unassisted marker from Kurtz.

Despite being behind by six goals, the Colts kept up the pressure and fired 25 shots at Andrew Loverock. The Colts did come away with two more goals  and the Wolves walked away with the 7-3 victory.

Loverock had an outstanding performance in goal for the Wolves, making 55 saves in the winning effort.

The game's three stars were: 1st Star: Andrew Loverock, 2nd Star: Matt Dias, and 3rd Star: Eric O'Dell.

The Wolves return to Sudbury for a matchup on Friday against their other division rivals, the Brampton Battalion on "Retro" Jersey night. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
