Evan Konyen scored his fourth goal in three games in the Sudbury Wolves’ 4-3 overtime loss to the London Knights on Dec. 17.

The Sudbury Wolves were back in action Sunday afternoon for their third game in as many days, this one against the London Knights

Marcus Vandenberg was the starting goaltender for the Wolves on the road while Michael Simpson got the nod in goal for the London Knights.

Before the ice even had time to dry, Sudbury native Max McCue scored for London, just 28 seconds into the game, to give the Knights a very early 1-0 lead.

Sudbury would get a number of solid opportunities to score against Simpson but couldn’t find the net, so the first period ended with the London Knights leading by a score of 1-0.

The Wolves would get a high number of quality scoring chances against Simpson in the second period, but didn’t find the back of the net until 4:28 remained in the period. The Pack tied the game at 1-1 thanks to San Jose Sharks’ prospect Quentin Musty’s 15th goal of the season.

In the last five minutes of the period, both teams would go back and forth trading chances but found themselves tied 1-1 with one period remaining in regulation.

Just past the two-minute mark of the third period, Wolves defenseman Nolan Collins scored his sixth goal of the season to give the Wolves their first lead of the game, by a score of 2-1.

Just over one minute later, William Nicholl scored his fourth goal of the season for London to once again tie the game at 2-2.

At the 10:38 mark of the third period, Evan Konyen would continue his hot streak with his fourth goal in three games and his 15th of the season to once again put the Wolves on top by a score of 3-2.

With 1:35 remaining in regulation, Ruslan Gazizov scored his 11th goal of the season for the Knights to tie the game 3-3 and send the game into overtime.

With only 11 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Gazizov scored his 12th goal of the season, and second of the game, to give the Knights the 4-3 win in overtime.

The Wolves earned one point in the loss and now hold a record of 16 wins, 11 losses, three overtime losses and one shootout loss on the season, good for second place in the Ontario Hockey League’s Central Division, two points behind the Mississauga Steelheads for first.

The Sudbury Wolves are now done until after Christmas. They next take the ice on Dec. 28 at the Molson Centre in Barrie to take on the Barrie Colts with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m. They then return home on Dec 29 to welcome the North Bay Battalion for a 7:05 p.m. tilt.
